Design Rationale

I noticed that the current system on the NYT Cooking website uses text bubbles that can be difficult to read and includes some redundant categories for recipe attributes: vegetarian, healthy easy, quick, weeknight, and pasta. In my redesign, I've selected new categories that I believe offer more clarity and better meet the needs of users: vegetarian, high protein, 1 pot meal, meal prep friendly, and quick.

I based the new icon set off of the chunky slab serif font, NYT Karnak, which the company currently utilizes for the wordmark, text bubble labels, recipe titles, and more.

Karnak is a custom bold display font designed by Font Bureau and Matthew Carter for The New York Times.
